Heat-shrink film is a type of polyethylene packaging film that contracts when exposed to temperatures exceeding the polymer’s softening point, taking the exact shape of the packaged item. The degree of film shrinkage depends on the temperature and the duration of its exposure to the material.

It is suitable for packaging various groups of food and industrial products, ensuring high-speed product packaging. Heat-shrink film protects the goods and allows for the secure bundling of multi-pack items, which saves space during transportation and warehouse storage. In heat-shrink film, the product is hermetically sealed, extending its shelf life.

The heat-shrinking process can be performed using automatic or semi-automatic equipment, or even manually using an industrial heat gun. The core packaging principle remains the same—cargo of various sizes is wrapped in a heat-shrink film, which then contracts under the influence of temperature. The shrinking effect of heat-shrink film is established during its manufacturing stage. To achieve this, the molecules of the heated polymer material are stretched and then cooled; upon subsequent reheating, the molecules contract again, returning to their original state.

Packaging different product groups requires distinct qualities from the heat-shrink film. Accordingly, the manufacturer develops tailored formulations to provide specific properties:

  • The film can shrink in a specific direction or shrink with constraints in both the transverse and longitudinal directions using different ratios;
  • Three-layer heat-shrink film consists of three polymer layers, allowing each layer to acquire engineered properties that modify how it interacts with the environment and the goods. For instance, slip additives are introduced into the layer adjacent to the packaged items, resulting in enhanced slip properties that prevent packaging damage. By combining layers with multi-directional shrinkage, it is possible to increase packaging strength and limit the load applied to the goods at specified points;
  • Recycled raw materials can be utilized to reduce packaging costs.
