High-quality polyethylene pipes for water and gas are manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using exclusively virgin raw materials. PE100 and PE80 are the grades of raw material from which polyethylene pipes are produced. Throughout the history of pipe manufacturing, pipes were initially produced from PE32, followed by PE63, and today they are manufactured from PE80 and PE100, with PE80 being almost entirely displaced by the more modern PE100.
What is the primary difference? The distinction between these material grades lies primarily in their molecular structure; specifically, the PE100 grade possesses a higher density and elasticity. This is achieved by creating a large number of double bonds with a minimal number of free side-chains.
Consequently, a pipe manufactured from PE100 will feature superior technical characteristics compared to pipes produced from earlier material modifications. Furthermore, PE100 pipes exhibit greater resistance to solar radiation and environmental factors. Additionally, a polyethylene pipe made from PE80 cannot be used in gas pipelines with an operating pressure exceeding 6 atmospheres.
What does this mean for the end consumer? It means that a pipe made from PE100 can withstand a higher pressure level than a PE80 pipe of identical diameter and wall thickness.
For example, a gas supply pipe made from PE100 with a diameter of 110 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm is rated for a working pressure of 10 atmospheres, whereas a PE80 pipe of the same diameter and wall thickness is rated for only 6 atmospheres.
Alternatively, consider another example: a consumer requires a gas pipe with a diameter of 110 mm rated for a working pressure of 6 atmospheres. They can select a PE80 pipe with a diameter of 110 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm to achieve a working pressure of 6 atmospheres. Alternatively, they can choose a PE100 pipe of 110 mm, but with a wall thickness of just 6.3 mm, which is also rated for a working pressure of 6 atmospheres.
To be fair, however, when comparing PE100 and PE80 pipes, it is technically incorrect to state that “a PE100 pipe is of higher quality.” It is more accurate to note that the PE100 raw material is more modern and technologically advanced, allowing products made from it to outperform products made from alternative HDPE grades in their performance characteristics.
